Aniceta “Nancy” De Luna Balmaceda was born on July 6, 1946 in Mariveles, Bataan, Philippines. She was the eldest of seven children born to Felipe and Fortunata Balmaceda. She attended Martinez Memorial Hospital School of Nursing where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
Aniceta met Juanito “Johnny” Briones after he broke his arm playing basketball and was treated at Martinez Memorial Hospital where she went to school and worked. They were married on September 9, 1968. Aniceta first came to the United States in early 1969 where her first job assignment was in Philadelphia, PA. Juanito followed shortly thereafter. They moved to Chicago, IL in 1970, where they lived for 8 years.
During the growth of the petroleum industry, the family moved to Houston in August 1978.
Aniceta continued her career as a registered nurse at many Houston area hospitals including: Memorial Hermann Hospital System, the Veterans Administration Hospital, Ben Taub General Hospital, Alief General Hospital/HCA West Houston Medical center, University Place Retirement Community, the Methodist Hospital, and University General Hospital. Her nursing experience spanned: oncology/chemotherapy administration, tireless shifts with HIV/AIDS patients during the early stages and height of the 1980’s pandemic, emergency room care at Houston’s leading trauma center, and medical-surgical floor nursing. She was a beloved nurse for over 40 years, well-respected by her peers, the attending physicians, and most of all, her patients. Aniceta was a follower deeply-rooted in the Catholic faith and will always be remembered for her selflessness, loving and nurturing nature, devotion to her family, and her feistiness.
On January 17, 2021, Aniceta was reunited in heaven with her parents, Felipe and Fortunata Balmaceda; her brother, Felipe Balmaceda Jr.; her husband, Juanito Briones; and her daughter, Elizabeth Briones. She is survived by her son, Arnold Briones, and his wife, Ruth Lim Briones, and grandchildren, Lauren and Zachary Briones; her son, Brian Briones; her brothers, Eduardo Balmaceda, Rolando Balmaceda, and Efren Balmaceda; her sisters, Zenaida Balmaceda Rollorata, Rosanna Dela Rosa and Melba Balmaceda Manuel; and her loving nieces, nephews, godchildren, in-laws, and friends.
All family and friends are welcome to viewing and visitation on Thursday, January 28 from 4:00-7:00 PM. Funeral and gravesite services are scheduled for Friday, January 29 at 10:00 AM CST.
