Ann was born in Houston to Charles and Abigail Stewart on the 12th of June 1931. After graduating from San Jacinto High School in 1949, she was united in marriage to John McKenzie, Jr. with whom she had four children in Bellaire, Texas, and later Wade Wallace, with whom she made a life in the Rio Grande Valley. Ann was a devoted homemaker, world traveler, accomplished woodcarver, avid bird watcher, and professional chef. Ann was a woman ahead of her time and her greatest passions were cooking for loved ones and exploring Mexico and Europe, where her sister still resides.
Ann led by example in both intellectual and artistic pursuits, having been registered as a stockbroker by the New York Stock Exchange and NASD in the early 1970s, achieving the Grand Diplome from the Cordon Bleu in Paris, and fluency in French at the age of 50. After beginning wood carving as a retirement hobby, she quickly mastered the art, earning awards from the national wood carvers’ community only a few years later.
Her family is ever grateful for the fortunate years of love and fun with Ann. Survivors include sister, Nancy (Stewart) Schoch; children, John Stewart McKenzie of Rockport, Mary Ann McKenzie of Houston and Austin, Robert Dickey “Bob” McKenzie of Bellaire, and Carolyn Sue (McKenzie) Grealy of Bellaire; five grandchildren, Abigail (Goode) Payne, Catherine Goode, Ana (McKenzie) Campbell, Charles Grealy, and Erin Grealy; and one great-grandchild, Madeleine Payne; as well as many nieces and nephews. Both of her husbands and her siblings Charles “Bubby” Stewart and Patricia Sue (Stewart) Burdsall preceded her in death.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family at four o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 18th of June, in the parlor of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where the funeral service is to commence at five o’clock.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
