“Tiny” as she was called by her siblings, was born the second child to Vera Hinkson and George Cornell on April 12, 1924 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She graduated from Little Rock High School, and later attended The Baptist State Hospital School of Nursing in Little Rock where she graduated as a registered nurse. Most of her early career was spent in pediatric nursing working with polio victims.
She met the love of her life, Dr. William “Bill” Hill and they were married on November 11, 1949. Their early married years were spent in Arkansas where Dr. Hill began his practice and where the first of three children, Nancy, was born in 1953. Ann then followed her husband in his medical practice journey to New York. It was there that her husband specialized in Pathology at Columbia and Sloan Hospital, and their first son, William Thomas “Tom” was born in 1956. From New York, the family moved to Flint Michigan where Ann continued to support her husband’s journey. In 1958 their youngest child Robert George “Bob” was born. Bill, Ann, and the kids finally set down roots in Houston in 1959. As her children reached their teenage years, Ann returned to her love of nursing by volunteering at Herman Hospital.
Ann was a servant of the Lord through and through. From the early 1960’s to the late 1970’s she was a member at Willow Meadow Baptist Church where she was active in the Women’s Missionary Union. She was the President of the Women’s Missionary Union at South Main Baptist Church from 1978-1981. She was also President of Baptist Women, the World Languages Director for the Women’s Missionary Union, and an active member of the prayer room at Tallowood Baptist Church. She had a large supporting role throughout the years in her husband’s mission work in Acuña, Mexico and in Kenya, Africa.
She traveled the globe with her husband and family members. When she was home, she could always be found tending to her roses, listening to Astros baseball, or cooking for her family. She had many beloved dogs over the years, including a Bulldog named Rocky and a Corgi by the name of Bear who was notoriously protective of vehicles. She also loved spoiling her grandchildren.
Ann is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, brother Charles Cornell, and youngest son Robert Hill. She is survived by her sister Doris Knight of Philadelphia, PA, son William Hill Jr. of Houston, daughter Nancy and husband Herbert Uecker, and their son Albert all of Bulverde, TX. Also surviving her are granddaughters Kacy Hill of Petrolia, TX and Katie Hill of Houston, along with 3 great-granddaughters, Paige, Nora, and Matilyn, along with several nieces and nephews.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from nine until eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 13th of November, in the Drawing Room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The interment will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
In memorial, charitable contributions may be made in her name to Tallowood Baptist Church at 555 Tallowood Rd, Houston, TX 77024.
