Annie Bell (Ann) Kirkland passed away November 1, 2012. She met life’s challenges with determination and a dry sense of humor, even during the past few years when she suffered from serious illness. Born in Mathis, Texas, Jan. 3, 1934, the seventh child of Norman and Bertha Phillips, she grew up in Sinton. She and Ken Kirkland married in 1953 and spent several years in U.S. oilfield towns. They moved to Venezuela in 1961, where they lived until 1984. Ann embraced the Venezuelan lifestyle and became an avid bridge and tennis player. In Maracaibo, she worked in the office of Escuela Bella Vista where she assisted in accounting and was “the bandaid lady” to students with bumps and scrapes. She was also the Maracaibo North American Association’s “Woman of the Year”. Back in Texas, she worked at The Living Bank, retiring in 1993 due to illness.
She is survived by her son, two daughters, their spouses and children; her nieces and nephews; her brother-in-law and his wife, and her cousins. Her siblings and her beloved husband Kenneth precede her in death. Friends are invited to remember Ann at The Spanish Flower, 4701 North Main, on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations are encouraged.
