Doug grew up on a farm and was the sixth of eight children born to Ella and Emil Wiechmann. He dropped out of school at age 12 to help on the family farm because his dad died unexpectedly. He enlisted in the army at age 15 and was deployed overseas to fight in the Korean War at the age of 17. He was wounded in the battle and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was taken prisoner of war at age 19 for 27 months. Because of the harsh conditions, Doug contracted tuberculosis. The prisoners were forced to carry heavy trees to build up the prison camp. As a result, he suffered with back injuries the rest of his life. Because of malnutrition, he lost all of his teeth before age 30.
After the war, Doug spent one year in the hospital where he was introduced to the love of his life, Loyce Sauls. After his release from the hospital, they married, had five children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Doug loved his family and worked hard to provide for them. He volunteered many years for Harris County Constables office and retired as a police officer. He loved his country and was proud to serve carrying the scars of war the rest of his life.
