Arthur Leland Baird

Arthur Leland Baird, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, respected Texas businessman, philanthropist, and dedicated community leader, passed away on the 4th of September 2026, in Houston, Texas. He was 88 years old.

Arthur was born into a family whose name became part of Texas history on the 6th of April 1938, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Flossie and W. Hoyt Baird. He grew up in Fort Worth alongside his siblings, Vernon, Allen, Carroll, and Betty Baird Garrett. He attended R.L. Paschal High School and graduated from Texas Christian University.

His paternal grandparents were Ninnie and William Allen Baird. His grandmother, Ninnie Baird—known to generations of Texans simply as “Mrs. Baird”—founded what became Mrs. Baird’s Bread in Fort Worth in 1908. What began in her kitchen grew through her hard work, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit, along with that of her children, into one of the most recognized and beloved names in Texas. Arthur’s father, W. Hoyt Baird, helped build and lead the family enterprise, establishing a legacy that Arthur would later carry forward in his own career.

Arthur dedicated much of his professional life to Mrs. Baird’s Bakeries, Inc., ultimately serving as Vice Chairman of the Board. He retired in 1998, marking the end of a distinguished career that represented another generation of Baird family leadership in a Texas company whose story had begun with his grandmother nearly a century earlier.

Retirement, however, did not mean slowing down. Arthur continued to devote his time, experience, and leadership to the community. He believed deeply in giving back and was committed to organizations working to strengthen Houston and improve the lives of others.

Over the years, he served on the boards of the Greater Houston Partnership, March of Dimes, Texas Education Reform Foundation, Business Community for Education, Breaking Barriers Foundation, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Sheltering Arms, Avance, Unity of Houston, and Memorial Hermann Hospital System, where he served for 12 years. His dedication to business leadership, philanthropy, fine arts and community service was recognized by the Texas Business Hall of Fame, Avance, and Community Partners of Houston.

At the center of Arthur’s life was his family. Arthur and Philamena’s 42-year marriage brought together a blended family and created a life filled with love, laughter, and generations of memories. Together, they were the proud parents of six children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Arthur was the loving father of Angela Baird McGehee (Craig) and grandchildren McKane Huser, Caitlin Huser and Dylan Huser; Terri Baird Smalley (Eddie Rasco) and grandchild Maverick Smalley; and Arthur Baird Jr. (Pamela) grandchildren Austin Baird and Catrina Powers. Through his marriage to Philamena, his family grew to include Steve Tucek (Debbie) and grandchild Stevie Ann Wilhelm; Julie Tucek; and Krista Tucek Calaway (James) and grandchild Zack Moser.

Arthur took tremendous pride in the generations that followed him. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a particularly meaningful continuation of the family story that had shaped so much of his life. He treasured the time spent with them and the memories they created together. Arthur is preceded in death by his parents, Flossie and W. Hoyt Baird, and his siblings, Vernon Baird, Allen Baird, and Carroll Baird.

Beyond his professional and civic commitments, Arthur was an avid outdoorsman who treasured time spent in nature. The Baird ranch held a special place in his heart and provided the setting for countless family memories. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. He loved the land and the outdoors, but even more, he loved sharing those places with the people closest to him. He loved telling stories, singing an old country song on his guitar and enjoyed a good joke. Arthur and his beloved wife, Philamena, also cherished the mountains of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where they enjoyed a summer home for many years.

Above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and proud Scotsman. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. With Arthur’s passing, a generation of the Baird family comes to a close, but the legacy of that generation continues through the family that follows. Arthur Leland Baird lived a life that connected an extraordinary Texas heritage with a legacy distinctly his own. He was a businessman who helped carry forward a historic family enterprise, a civic leader who generously gave his time and talents, an outdoorsman who loved the land and the mountains, and a philanthropist who believed in strengthening the community around him.

His legacy will live on not simply through a historic Texas name, but through the family he loved, the communities he served, the friendships he treasured, and the generations who will continue to tell his stories.
