Barbara was born to Vera Williams Rice and William Calvin Rice on August 17, 1933, in Houston, Texas. Barbara was an only child but had many cousins who became her lifelong brothers and sisters.
Barbara attended the University of Houston and received her degree in Education and was offered a job in Spring Branch school district. While teaching there, a friend invited her to come to dinner and meet Byron Martens, a local pharmacist. Seven months later, they were married on July 11, 1959, and were blessed with two loving sons, Craig and Warren.
After her children were in high school, Barbara taught kindergarten at Immanuel Lutheran School for 18 years. She remained very close to many students throughout her life and attended their weddings and family activities.
Barbara was deeply proud of her Texas heritage and cherished the fact that her Burleson ancestor fought with Sam Houston in the Battle of San Jacinto.
Barbara enjoyed traveling the world with Byron and reminisced of her travels often.
The most important part of Barbara’s life was her love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ along with her family, good friends, good scotch and a cold margarita.
Her favorite bible verse was Revelation 2:10, “Remain faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life.”
Barbara is survived by Craig Martens and wife Lara, their children Joshua and Elena. Warren Martens, his son Daniel and wife Katelyn, and two great-grandchildren, Easton and Palmer.
May “Nana’s” memory be celebrated as her legacy lives through the lives she touched with kindness and thoughtfulness. A family graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2026, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
