January 13, 1934March 11, 2013

Barbara Lee McCall died at Memorial Hermann Southwest hospital March 11, 2013 after a sudden brief illness. She was 79 years old, having been born in Houston on January 13, 1934. She was preceded in death by her Kansas-born parents, Verne O. and Sylvia Shields Clements, and by both her brothers, Dr. Richard O. Clements and attorney Joseph Eugene Clements. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, John Todd McCall, Jr., and by sisters-in-law Mary H. Clements and Dorwayne P. Hinde. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Richard O. Clements, Jr., and wife Barbara Ann, Susan Clements Houchins and husband James, Carol Clements Murdock and husband Richard, and William H. Clements and wife Debbie Kaplan, as well as by 7 grandnieces and grandnephews and even one great-grandnephew and one great-grandniece. Finally she is survived by a wonderful team of caregivers, Gbemi Adewodu, Carla Nelson, Abosede Orekoya and Nora Durojaiye, who did so much to make her final years pleasant ones. Barbara Lee was a 1952 mid-term graduate of Houston’s Lamar High School. She obtained a degree in Interior Design from the University of Texas (Austin) where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She designed executive offices in downtown Houston before turning her talents to the residential market. An auto accident put her in short leg braces but did not slow her down or keep her from marrying Todd in 1969. In Memphis, Tennessee, she settled into the role of college professor’s wife. In 1977, she and Todd returned to Houston where they have lived ever since. Visitation will be Saturday, March 23, starting at 11:30 a.m. followed immediately by the funeral service at 12:30 p.m., both taking place at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway. Memorial contributions may be made to TIRR (the Texas Institute of Research and Rehabilitation) or to Habitat for Humanity or to any charity of the donor’s choice.

What I admired in you was your perseverance. It never waned. You were a good neighbor. We will be neighbors again someday, when I join you, my cousin and my dear friend at Memorial Oaks.
