On October 14, 1950, a star was born to August and Dorothy Simpson. Bernadette Brenda Lee Morris was the oldest daughter of eleven children. She dedicated her life to Christ at an early age. She joined Sunnyside Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor E. R. Curvey in 1978. In 2018, she united with Living Faith Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Rickey King where she served until the Lord called home on April 2, 2024.
She graduated from Paul Breaux High School in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1968 and not long after moved to Houston, Texas for new horizons. It was here, that she met her life partner, Jake Morris. They married on January 11, 1972. From their union, there were three children, Lionel, Carmall and Lamell and four children that they helped nurture Demetrian, Leslie, Desiree, and Donald.
For over 30 years, she was a dedicated Food Services Manager within the school systems. She worked in HISD and in the charter school sector. Her place in the kitchen was not just a job but her expression of affection. Her dedication spilled from her kitchen to theirs, with recipes that were filled with a drizzle of sass, a few bunches of devotion and several pounds of love. After dedicating over 20 years of service with Beatrice Mayes Institute she proudly hung her apron up completing her final assignment.
More than a cook, her greatest titles were mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Like the star that she was, she lit up any space with her presence. Her radiant smile, her irresistible laughter, her wit, and charm were often just what was needed to brighten anyone’s day. We may never know, but still may wonder what something has to do with the price of eggs or if it was too much sugar for a dime, but it goes without saying that she was love, is loved, and will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, August and Dorothy Simpson, her husband, Jake Morris, her daughter, Carmall Morris Robinson and her brothers Lee Simpson, Kendrick Simpson, and Cornell Simpson, and one grandson Lindale Morris.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two children: Lionel Morris (Pauline) and Lamell Morris (Iman), four children in love: Demetrian, Leslie (Jeff), Desiree and Donald; six brothers: James Simpson (Brenda), M. Charles (Celeste), Johnathan (Marla), Gary Simpson, A. Kendrick Simpson, Romero Simpson and a sister Augustine Simpson; a brother in-law Kenneth Morris; her beloved sisters-in-law: Helen Morris, and Augusta Morris; 17 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
A visitation for Bernadette will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at LIVING FAITH BAPTIST CHURCH, 4310 Holloway Dr, Houston, TX 77047. The funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00 AM. The committal will be held following services from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at PARADISE SOUTH CEMETERY, 2237 Cullen Blvd, Pearland, TX 77581.
