Bertha was a wonderful mother, wife, and dear friend. She was born in Chihuahua, Mexico on a cold February 12th, day in 1938. Her mother Maria de la Paz Palomares soon moved to northern Mexico. She grew up in a small town named Comales in Tamaulipas. There she excelled in academics earning a scholarship to further her studies in college. Because of the norms of the time, she was not allowed to attend. She met her husband, Felix Saenz and married on Feb. 12, 1957. As she raised her family, she completed a course in first aid skills and helped the town doctor care for many. Even as she moved to Houston, people from her small town were referred to her as she administered medicine given to them by that town doctor in Mexico. In her small town, she also was the president of the "Damas Catolicas" at her local parish and organized parades and celebrations for the town. She was a friend to many and admired by all as she was asked a great many times to be a godmother to many. She was a talented singer, artist, craftswoman and accomplished in writing skills. Here in Houston, she served as the Secretary to Crockett Elementary's Parent Teacher Organization and helped Principal Mrs. Troutman created costumes and cooked meals for students, teachers and other school officials. She also helped in political campaigns alongside a dear friend, Mrs. Jones.
She raised four children: Sandra L. Mercado, Felix Arturo Saenz, Maria Esmeralda Saenz, and Bertha A. Franco. She loved her children and was always ready to aid for their success in life. She saw all her children graduate from high school and colleges and this was her greatest joy.
After raising the children, she set out to raise all her grandchildren: Alejandro Garcia, Arturo Saenz, Andrea Saenz, Gabriel Franco, Miguel Franco and Julia Franco. She prided her self in their academic and life long success. She saw all her grandchildren graduate from high school and college. She was the queen of everyones heart and will be greatly missed.
Finally, she loved her sons and daughter in law: Mario Mercado [+], Alicia Saenz, and Gabriel L. Franco. She helped every one of them in whatever they needed. She loved greatly and fully. A woman of great faith and unwavering love and affection for all who knew her. May she rest in the peace of our Lord and may Perpetual Light shine upon her.
