Betty was born in Natchitoches on March 24th, 1944, to Mr. and Mrs. Sam and Lou Jessie Moore. She was the youngest of their four children, coming after Mary, Hobby, and Dorothy. She attended Mooretown Elementary and Union Street Jr. High before graduating with honors from Bethune High School. From here, she made her way to Grambling College for a short while. After her time at Grambling, Betty moved to Houston to begin her next chapter.
Betty met the greatest love of her life, J.C. Barnes, in Houston. Their meeting marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership rooted in love and devotion. They were married in 1966 and shared many years building a home filled with family, laughter, and cherished memories.
Betty and J.C. were eager to start a family of their own, and their joy was complete when they welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Kimberly, in December of 1969. Becoming parents was one of the greatest blessings of their lives, and Betty embraced motherhood with endless love, devotion, and pride.
Through her daughter Kimberly, Betty was a loving and devoted grandmother to Kalian and Madison. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and took great pride in watching them grow. Betty was also blessed with the joy and honor of becoming a great-grandmother to her beloved great-grandson, Jerry, a role that brought her immense happiness.
Over the years, Betty devoted her time to Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Driven by a genuine passion for helping others, Betty spent more than 30 years as a devoted nurse with the Harris County Hospital District. Known for her kindness, patience, and tireless work ethic, she cared for her patients as if they were family and left a lasting impact on coworkers and those she served.
Betty found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved watching her favorite soap operas, listening to gospel and jazz music, and spending time talking and laughing with her family.
Betty will be lovingly remembered for her gentle spirit, nurturing heart, and the unwavering care she gave to her family. She poured herself into the lives of those she loved, always offering comfort, guidance, and unconditional support. To her family, she was not only a devoted mother, grandmother, and cherished Gigi, but also a beloved sister, aunt, and loyal friend. Her warmth, kindness, and steady presence were gifts beyond measure. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love lives on in the countless lives she touched and in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Lou Jessie Moore; her husband, J.C. Barnes; her sister, Mrs. Mary Tousant; and her brother, Mr. Hobby Moore. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Kimberly Barnes; her granddaughters, Kalian Samuels and Madison Barnes- Jones; her great-grandson, Jerry Brown III; her sister Dorothy Rivers and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
