Betty was born on October 17, 1935 to William “Marvin” Register and Marguerite Yates Register in Shreveport, LA and passed away on February 7, 2017. She graduated from Byrd High School and continued her education at East Texas Baptist College graduating in 1957 with a major in Elementary Education. She met her future husband, Richard “Dick” Hudsmith at Shreveport’s Little Theater while performing in the musical “Leave It To Jane” and as they say, “The rest is history.”
Betty was a dedicated elementary school teacher from 1957 to 2001. She started her career in Bossier City, LA and in 1975 moved to Houston, TX where she began her long teaching career at Kennedy Elementary in Alief Independent School District. In her 41 years of teaching, she taught over 1200 children from 1st to 3rd grade. In 1990, she was Kennedy’s teacher of the year, but many of her student’s would say she was teacher of the year every year. Her classrooms were inviting and fun and she was loved by teachers, parents and especially her students.
Betty loved spending time with her daughters Shelley and Robin. She enjoyed their mani-pedi weekends, shopping and making sure that every outfit had matching accessories. She was an avid reader and loved cats. Her laugh was infectious and everyone knew when she was in the room. She was funny, friendly and never met a stranger. Even when she was in the hospital, she always had the nurses laughing. After moving to The Garden’s Senior Living facility, she looked forward to her afternoon of Bingo and Dominoes with her friends. Many remember Betty for her beautiful alto voice. She sang for Shreveport’s Opera in her college years and was a featured soloist at Highland Baptist Church in Shreveport, LA and College Park Baptist Church in Houston, TX.
In their senior years, Betty and Dick were active members of Second Baptist West Campus and shared as activity directors for the Cornerstone Sunday School Class. In the last few years she was a member of Houston’s First Baptist Church and attended the Day Spring class. She enjoyed Bible Study and her daily devotions.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Richard William Hudsmith and parent’s William Marvin Register and Marguerite Register. She survived by her sister’s Edress Daniel of North Little Rock, Arkansas and Judith Johnson of Shreveport, LA, daughter’s, Shelley Karl and husband, Stephen of Houston, TX and Robin Collier of San Antonio, TX; two grandchildren, Stephen Michael Karl and James Michael Collier; many nieces and nephews.
