Betty Williams Moreton died peacefully at home on Tuesday, the 21st of October 2014, in Houston, at the age of 83. She was born on the 10th of December 1930, in Memphis, Tennessee, where she attended Central High School and continuing her education at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and made many lifelong friends.
Following college, Betty went to work for Delta Airlines as a flight attendant. She was based in New Orleans, where she met the love of her life, Charles Perkins Moreton. They married on the 18th of September 1954 and lived in Shreveport until 1956 when they moved to Houston.
Betty was caring and elegant. She had a deep concern for the wellbeing of friends and family, and a passion for helping all those in need. She was a devout Christian and an active member of St. Philip Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon. She was active in and served on the boards of directors of Women’s Christian Home, an organization dedicated to helping homeless women, and Holly Hall, a Christian retirement community. Betty also served as President of the Kappa Delta Alumni Association.
Although Betty was very active at church and in her community, her love for her husband, children and grandchildren was foremost in her life. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Betty is preceded in death by Charlie, her loving husband of 56 years; and her parents, Milton and Thelma Williams. Betty is survived by her brother, Leigh Williams and his wife Sylvia; her daughters, Laura McDaniel and her husband Mike, and Dana Whiteford; her sons, Sam and his wife Ellen, Elliott and his wife Laura, and Paul and his wife Julie; her grandchildren, Ben and Elizabeth Driggs, Ted and Amy Whiteford, Mallory and Charles Moreton, Andrew Moreton and Riley and Kyle Culver, Laney and Luke Moreton, Meagan and Kristin McDaniel; her niece, Jenny Williams Cameron; and nephew, Todd Williams.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Angie Hernandez, her longtime helper, as well as the staff at Kimberly Cares for their outstanding care given to Betty.
A memorial service celebrating her life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning, on Monday, the 27th of October, at St. Phillip Presbyterian Church, 4807 San Felipe in Houston, where Rev. Dr. John Wurster, Pastor, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent fellowship hall.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Betty’s name be directed to St. Philip Presbyterian Church, 4807 San Felipe St., Houston, TX, 77056; or to Holly Hall, 2000 Holly Hall St., Houston, TX, 77054.
