Betty McComb Shropshire passed away peacefully on November 29th, 2022, in Houston, Texas at the age of ninety-three. Betty was born to Judge John David McComb and Lena Emma Walters in Oklahoma City. At an early age, her family relocated to their original hometown of Jacksboro, Texas where she grew up through high school. It was here that she met her late husband, William (“Bill”) Sanders Shropshire. The couple made their home in Sprayberry, Texas and then Big Spring, Texas before relocating to Houston where they raised their family. From 1976 to 1994, the couple lived in Wichita, Kansas where they formed many dear friendships before returning to Houston again.
Betty attended Baylor University earning a bachelor’s degree in Education and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority (formerly The Athenians). Betty loved participating in Kappa functions and returning to Baylor for SING or Pigskin Review. Over the years she periodically taught elementary school as she and Bill raised their family.
Throughout her life, Betty’s steadfast love for her husband and family was evident in her care and support. Through lean years and plentiful ones there was always food on the table, mended clothes, a clean home, and the warmth of her love. Betty and Bill were a team. Together they fostered community in their neighborhoods, church, Bill’s work, and extended family while modeling a friendship and healthy marriage of 51 years before Bill’s passing in 2000. During that time, the couple enjoyed traveling and supporting Bill’s love of Longhorn sports and her competitive jibes anytime Baylor beat Texas. Betty’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids, taking delight from sharing their activities.
Betty preferred to stay behind the scenes supporting various organizations providing meals and comfort in times of crisis or hosting bible studies, bridge parties and book clubs. Her servant heart was recognized by others elevating her to leadership roles in the local church and chapters of the American Association of University Women and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother, husband and cousins, and is survived by her daughter Shelley and her husband Noel and her son Bill and his wife Jenny; her grandchildren Courtney, Jason, David, Patrick, Nicole and Emily along with their families; her great grandchildren Ian, William, Lillian, Sam, Mckayla, Margaret, Gus and Gretchen and Betty’s first and second cousins and their families.
There will be a celebration of Betty’s life led by friends and family at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77024 on December 9, 2022, at 2:00 PM, followed by a private interment at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079.
