Billie Pucciarello Lester, a Ridgefield, Connecticut resident for the past six years, died peacefully at her home on July 18, 2026, surrounded by her children. Born Billie Julian Shelly in Galveston, Texas, on October 8, 1936, to parents Julius Shelly and Velma Inez Walker, she spent a lifetime encouraging and developing talent in dance and the arts in thousands of children.

From an early age, Billie studied with some of the most respected dance and baton instructors in Galveston and Houston. By the age of eleven, she was teaching neighborhood children in her own backyard. At Ball High School in Galveston, she served as lead majorette before attending Sam Houston State University, where she became the featured baton twirler.

Billie married Anthony Pucciarello when she was just eighteen and soon found herself with a family of four young children. The family moved to Houston for Anthony’s job and Billie, the budding entrepreneur, opened “Billie’s Studio,” where she taught children dance, baton twirling, grace, and charm.

What began as a single studio soon expanded to locations throughout Houston. Her vision grew to include “Billie’s Belles and Beaus,” a childcare center, before culminating in the Memorial Drive Community Center.

There, generations of children learned dance, baton twirling, gymnastics, athletics, confidence, and discipline under the guidance of the woman they simply called “Miss Billie.”

Her passion for developing poise, confidence, and character naturally led to her involvement with the Miss America Organization. She participated in the Miss America pageant and later owned several Miss Texas local pageant franchises, where she mentored young women and encouraged them to strive for excellence both on and off the stage.

Billie continued studying dance throughout her career in Los Angeles and New York. She later taught workshops across the country for Nico Charisse. Never content to stop learning or reinventing herself, Billie became a successful realtor. Her natural eye for beauty and design evolved into a passion for interior decorating. In her late sixties, she married John Lester, with whom she shared many happy years.

For all that she accomplished professionally, Billie always considered her family to be her greatest achievement. Nothing brought her greater joy than celebrating the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and watching each new generation flourish.

Billie is survived by her sister, Sherry Moskal, and husband Ken; brother-in-law Alfred Pucciarello and wife Marie; her children Toni Pucciarello of Houston; Angela Turek and husband David of Ridgefield, Connecticut; Michael Pucciarello and his wife, Aurora, of Argyle, Texas; Darrell Pucciarello and his late husband, Keith Lincoln, of New Lebanon, New York; and stepchildren Ann Lester Walker and John Harris Lester.

She was a devoted grandmother to Dr. Eva Delgado (Kit); Anthony Pucciarello III (Olivia); Gavin Pucciarello (Farnoosh); Juliana Bruno; Hayden Turek (Avery); Lorenzo Bruno; Francesca Bruno; Christian Pucciarello (Liddy); Jon Michael Pucciarello (Hannah); and Jackson Turek (Bridget). She also treasured her great-grandchildren, Eliana, Nadia, Tala, Gianna, Enzo, Dakota, and Stella June.

A funeral and celebration of Billie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home in Houston. A private burial service will follow on Sunday morning.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Billie’s legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the students she inspired, and the countless lives made richer by her kindness, encouragement, and unwavering belief in the potential of others. She will be remembered not only for what she accomplished, but for the confidence she instilled, the opportunities she created, and the love she gave so generously.
