Billie Joan Roberts, a beloved resident of Cypress, Texas, passed away on August 21, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in Galveston, Texas, on March 5, 1937, to Robert “Holice” and Roberta “Ruby” Mason, Joan was the eldest child and cherished her time with family and friends, as well as the beach. She took piano lessons during junior high school. Joan was an active member of the Ball High School Drum and Bugle Corp, The Tornettes. Joan was voted “Belle of the Ball” at her Senior Prom.
Joan's early life was marked by resilience and bravery, particularly following a severe automobile accident in 1954 that initially left her unable to walk. Through determination and medical intervention, she not only walked again, but proudly walked across the stage to receive her diploma in 1955.
In 1960, Joan married Robert Lee Roberts, Sr. in Galveston, Texas. Together, they had two sons, Robert L Roberts Jr (Robbie) and Stephen A Roberts (Steve). The family moved to Houston, Texas in 1969, where they settled in the Aldine area.
Joan's career was defined by her devotion and hard work. She served as an Administrative Assistant in the Counseling Office at Lone Star College for 28 years, retiring in 1997. Post-retirement, she enjoyed monthly luncheons with her “lunch bunch” from the college. Joan and her husband cherished traveling to visit their grandchildren and spending time with family.
Joan is survived by her brother Bobby Mason and wife Helen; son Robbie Roberts and wife Linda; son Steve Roberts and wife Stephanie; grandchildren, Susan Bridges and husband Dennis, Mason Roberts and wife Alexandra, Lilie Roberts and fiancé Landon Pritchett; four great grandkids, Lucas, Jackson and Revlynn Bridges and Aubrey Roberts; nephews Tony Mason and wife Erica, Paul Mason and wife Sarah; great-nieces and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert H Mason, mother, Ruby Mason, and her husband, Robert Lee Roberts Sr.
Joan's personal life was filled with compassion, generosity, and a love for music, particularly country and Gospel songs. She was a devoted grandmother, attending her grandchildren's sporting events and choir concerts, and was known for her thoughtful gift-giving. Joan's love for game shows like The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune was well-known, as was her dedication to remembering birthdays and sending cards.
Joan's legacy is one of selflessness, kindness, and humor. Her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ was a cornerstone of her life, and she often credited her survival and recovery from her accident to divine intervention. Her love and devotion to her family and faith never wavered.
The Roberts family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Joan’s Lone Star College family, her “lunch bunch,” and her dear friends Rhonda Cannon, Anabelle Hernandez, and Shaheen Ansari for their consistent support and visits. They are also thankful to the staff at Cypress Creek Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for their compassionate care.
A visitation will be held at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038, on September 3, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
