Billy was born on October 23, 1933, in Pinedale, Mississippi, to W.I. "Pete" Harris and Annie Evelyn Rochester. After the loss of his mother when he was just six years old, his father later married Zada Pauline Hollinsworth, an elementary teacher. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, Billy naturally stepped into the role of big brother, a responsibility he carried proudly throughout his life. He is survived by his siblings Nella, W.I. "Doc," Zada, Lola, Barbara, and Wayne. His older brother, Jimmy, and sister, Joan, preceded him in death.
A proud graduate of Mississippi State University, Billy earned his Bachelor of Science degree after serving his country in the United States Army. Initially assigned as an office clerk, he quickly discovered that paperwork and routine were not his calling. Finding military office life far too humdrum for his adventurous spirit, he volunteered to become a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he completed nine jumps. It was the first of many times in life that he chose excitement over comfort.
On April 23, 1960, Billy married the love of his life, Linda Jean Miller. Together they raised three daughters: Tammy Whitehouse, Melonie Haegner, and Monica Lueder. The loss of Linda to breast cancer in 1992 was one of the greatest sorrows of his life, yet his love for her never faded. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, one great-grandson who lovingly called him "GG," and a second great-grandchild on the way.
Billy enjoyed a distinguished 33-year career with Texaco, beginning as a field recorder and working his way up to become a geophysicist before retiring in 1993. Never one to sit still, he paired his professional success with an entrepreneurial spirit, owning rental properties, restaurants, a car paint and body shop, and several coin-operated car washes throughout the years. He believed in hard work, opportunity, and building something lasting.
A man of deep faith, Billy faithfully served as a deacon in his church. He lived his beliefs through service, kindness, generosity, and genuine care for others.
Those who knew Billy will remember him not only for what he accomplished, but for who he was. He was the life of every gathering, the keeper of countless stories, and a world-class jokester whose sense of humor could light up any room. Everyone was his friend, whether they had known him for decades or had just met him. Conversations with Billy often turned into unforgettable stories, usually with a punchline close behind.
Though his family will miss him deeply, they find comfort in knowing that Heaven has gained a storyteller, a prankster, a faithful servant, and one unforgettable character. His
legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the friendships he cultivated, and the laughter he shared so freely with all who knew him.
