With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Carol (Bou-Chai) Yang of Houston, Texas. A beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished family member and friend, who left us peacefully on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at the age of 73 after a battle with colon cancer. Carol's enduring faith, love for her family, and deep dedication to all things she has done have touched the lives of many.
Born in Keelung, Taiwan on 2/8/1950, Carol's journey began at the Taipei First Girls High School in 1967. Her journey into pharmacy then began with her graduation from National Taiwan University in 1971, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Her drive towards the pharmaceutical sciences led her to the United States, where she furthered her education at the University of Mississippi, obtaining a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1973. Carol's pursuit of excellence continued at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where she earned a Master's degree of Biomedical Sciences in 1977. She then completed a year at the University of Houston Pharmacy School, which enabled her to practice pharmacy in the United States.
While at Ole Miss, Carol met Milton, fell in love, and were married 7/19/1976. She eventually retired from hospital pharmacy some years later to co-found Evergreen with Milton, a venture that not only demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit but also their commitment to one another, as well as the community. Carol's professional life was marked by an unwavering commitment to her patients, and later customers. She was always more than what her position dictated; she was a confidant and advisor to many, and one who always went the extra mile.
Despite living in Houston, she had an elegant sense of New England style - perhaps borne during one of her many trips to visit her son in Massachusetts. While there, she of course would take many side trips to visit Maine (the ongoing search for the word's best lobster roll, Kennebunkport, Boothbay Harbor), New Hampshire (the ultimate Barbour Outlet), Rhode Island (the mansions), and Vermont (the farms, mountains, and foliage). Carol's greatest pride and joy was her son David, as well as his closest cousins Daniel, Rebekah, Esther, and Philip - to whom she was a devoted mother.
To pair with her love of New England, she also had an unbridled curiosity and love for nature which she bestowed on everyone she could. She often visited the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center for its animals and plants, but perhaps not so much its insects. Through all of her talents and learnings, her love, wisdom, and guidance have proven to be cornerstones of her childrens' lives, and her legacy will live on through them.
Above all, Carol was a devout Christian whose faith guided her through life. She found great joy and solace in her church community and was a source of spiritual inspiration to many. Carol's life, even during her illness was a testament to her strength, resilience, and the deep love she had for her family and friends. As we mourn her loss, we continue celebrating her remarkable life and the countless ways she enriched those around her.
Carol Yang will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her spirit, love, teaching, and direction will continue to guide us, and her memory will forever be a blessing to all who knew her.
She was preceded by her younger brother Mark Yang and older brother Joseph Yang. She is survived by her older sisters Elizabeth Chowwang and Anna Yang, her older brother Peter Yang, her husband Milton Yang and her son David Yang.
