Bridget (Bee) Doherty Long celebrated life for 90 years and passed away on March 7, 2013 in Houston, Texas. Bee and her twin Alice were born to Bridget and Thomas Doherty in Hammond, Indiana on December 16, 1922.
The family moved to Houston when the twins were 13. Bee graduated from Milby High School. After one year at Incarnate Word Business College, she started her career with Hippolite Mengden. One year later she joined Arrow Mills. After a whirlwind romance of all of four months, she married the love of her life, Harry. She continued at Arrow Mills and rose to the rank of Assistant Treasurer. From 1981-2012, she was President of W. H. Nigh and Co. Inc.
Bee had a dazzling smile, great laugh, positive outlook, quick wit and a razor sharp mind (even at 90). The family often heard, “I just love your mother; she is such an inspiration to me.”
Her favorite saying was, “I’m lovin’ you!”
She was past president of the St. Thomas Mother’s Club. She was a member of Charity Guild of Catholic Women for 35 years and received their Emeritus Award last September. She was also a member of the Newman’s Circle. She and her husband Harry were parishioners at St. Cecilia’s Church where she assisted with baptism after Sunday masses. Later she and Harry were one of the founding families at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Bee loved investing in the stock market. She and her buddy, Rob Burgher, formed the Tyro Investment Club and later The Gambler’s Call Investment Club. She would be pleased to say that she went out of this world with the stocks and the Dow at an all-time high.
The family takes great comfort in knowing that she is reuniting with her soul mate of 33 years, Harry E. Long; parents, Thomas and Bridget Doherty; sisters, Annie Prause, Margaret Snuffer, and twin sister Alice Adams.
Survivors include children: Thomas G. Long (Lisa), Mary Ann Long, and John P. Long (Betsy). She also leaves her loving granddaughters: Erin, Kathleen, Meg and Haley. Other family includes sisters-in-laws Nancy Allison and Dot Cody. Also, nephews and nieces: Bill Snuffer (Donna), Pat Snuffer (Ellen), Perry Adams, Patricia Adams Hopkus (Tommy), Lynn McCormick (Ken), Marsha Bowlen, Bobby Adams (Heather), Nancy Cody, Mike Cody, Harry Trainer (Cindy), and Regina Sledge (Kenneth).
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to her caregivers: Carolyn Washington, Darlene Allen, Charsetta (Cha Cha) Bailey, Rolanda Green and Rashaun Smith. Special thanks to our deacon, Randy Graham, for bringing the Eucharist and his loving support to Bee every Sunday.
