Bruce Alan Coplen was born on March 14, 1957 in Dallas, Texas. Bruce went home to the Lord in Houston, Texas on July 12, 2020.

Bruce married his high school sweetheart, Julie Coplen, on August 23, 1980. The two were together until Julie’s passing in April of 2020. Their marriage brought them to Houston while Bruce attended South Texas College of Law, and upon obtaining his J.D., the two never left.

Bruce was an Eagle Scout at 13, a proud Baylor alum, served as a Trustee at his church, and was a constant presence in youth soccer while volunteering on various non-profit boards and serving as a coach for both teams his boys played for and for others.

Bruce loved being around his family and lived for time spent with his boys and Julie. That time and love often manifested itself at the deer lease with the boys, date nights with Julie, or road trips to see loved ones in Texas and afar.

Bruce is survived by his sons: Bradley Coplen; and Matthew Coplen, his wife Clara Lin, and their son Archer Coplen. Bruce is also survived by his mother, Bobbie J. Coplen; sister, Rebecca Gourley; cousins, Jan Cox and Charles Rudolph; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bruce was preceded in death by his father, Ernest B. Coplen, and his wife, Julie A. Coplen.

A private service will be held on August 1, 2020 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery.

Matt and Bradley, so sorry to hear about Bruce's passing. I am so thankful I know that Bruce was a solid Christian man. When I see you again I will share the last correspondence I had with Bruce. It was a blessing to me that we were friends. I know it has been a rough year for you both. Bruce was very proud of the strong and capable men he called his sons. May God continue to bless you and all that you do. Let me know if I can help you with anything.

Matthew and Bradley, I am very sad to hear of your father's passing just this morning. He was a great neighbor and friend. Although we didn't see each other as much in later years I remember the earlier years when all our children were growing up and how much fun we all had on different occasions. You're father was a kind and gentle guy with a big heart. I will truly miss them both. Somehow I always felt they would always be right now the street but God had other plans. Praying for you both. I can only imagine the heartache you both are feeling but praying sweet memories and knowing that he's in your future will see you through. God bless and keep you. Rest in peace Bruce.

Brad & Matt, it was with sadness we learned of the passing of both of your parents. Your dad (& mom) had a passion for soccer and a love of coaching. May the memories of your parents bring you both comfort.

It's impossible to put into words what Bruce was and meant to so many, so I'll try to put into words what he was to me. Growing up, my family didn't have much, and that included not having a father figure. Bruce recruited me to play for his soccer team, and never asked my family for a dime. Despite the flights, hotels, training fees, etc, Bruce never asked for anything in return other than winning. His generosity showed me a world that I never thought was accessible to me, and that included a full scholarship to college. I also got to ride with him to many tournaments out of town, and remember several long conversations with him still to this day. He became a role model of what a man and father should be. He was generous, competitive, forgiving, and demanding all wrapped into one. Having the experience of him being my coach, and feeling this loss, I can only imagine how much worse it is for Matt and Brad. He was loved and will be missed greatly.

Bruce was a mentor, coach, father figure, and friend to me and many other players in the youth soccer world. He was actually my sole coach through my entire competitive soccer career for 10 years, and man was I lucky to have him on my side. Bruce was highly respected for his heart and passion for the game of soccer. From traveling the country with 20 wild teenagers to get to soccer showcase tournaments, from him picking me up for practice several days a week, he always was in the front leading the way with such confidence and knowledge. Bruce was in nearly all of my youth soccer memories, and words don't describe how grateful I am for him. HE will be truly missed.

Brad and Matt,
It is so easy to see and to know how wonderful your parents were and how much they loved you and each other. I’m glad we were able to meet your dad and wish we could have met your sweet mom too. You’re both very blessed to have had such great role models and I know you will continue to make them proud. May you always keep near the things they taught you, and may you feel God’s comfort and peace now and always.

Brad and Matt, thank you for sharing your Dad with all of us over the years. His dedicated time, devotion, and mentorship to the numerous lives he touched through youth soccer planted the seed for our generation to grow into the men we have become. His simple acts of kindness and strong commitment to showing us how to lead, fight, and win were life lessons we will have with us forever. Wishing you both and your family healing in your time of grief.
