A life is so much more than dates and accomplishments. It is how you filled those dates and who filled them with you. Byron Joe Hall Sr.’s life is an example of how to live and live well. His life was always guided by his discipleship of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He lived big but worshipped bigger. If there is one thing he would want his life to speak that would be, love God with all your heart and love others.
Byron Joe Hall was born in the small East Texas town of Lindale on October 12th, 1936. As the only child of Joyce and Joe Bailey Hall he grew up fishing and hunting in the Sabine bottomland with his faithful bird dog and developed a lifelong passion of enjoying God's creation which he instilled in his own children. Throughout his youth Byron grew in faith as he grew in stature. He was an outstanding athlete and developed the discipline of always doing his best and his obsession with detail in anything he did. He became an outstanding pitcher in fast pitch softball. Softball wasn't the only sport that Byron excelled in. He lettered all four years in baseball and football as well. He continued to play softball in junior college and in dental school. Byron graduated from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in 1961. While in dental school Byron found the only thing that could compete with sports and the outdoors for his attention, a beautiful young nursing student named Shirley Prycer from Plain Dealing, Louisiana. They were married on December 22nd, 1961.
After graduation Byron and Shirley moved to Oceanside, California, and he served as a dentist in the United States Navy and continued his passion of playing fast pitch softball as a pitcher. After completing his tour, Byron was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and he returned home to Texas with Shirley. Byron started practicing dentistry in Kemah, Texas with Shirley’s uncle, Joe Harris. They welcomed their first child Byron Joe (Joey) Hall, Jr. They moved to Lufkin Texas where he practiced for a short time, and they had their second child Suzanne (Suzy). Byron and Shirley decided to put down roots in Houston Texas, where Byron practiced dentistry for the remainder of his career. They also welcomed their third child Jason Stuart. Byron was passionate about his career and became a dentist to some of the most prominent families in Houston and many international patients as well.
After a long illness Byron passed into his glorious heavenly home on January 16th, 2025. He was surrounded by his family who were blessed to see the gentleness and joy of a man looking forward to being fully healed and with the assurance that awaited him in heaven was his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Byron is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley Prycer Hall; his children, Byron Joe (Joey) Hall Jr. and spouse, Brenda Hall; his daughter Suzanne McCraw and spouse, John L. (Lin) McCraw, and son Jason Stuart Hall and spouse Kim Henderson. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, who lovingly refer to him as “Pop”, Katie Cheatham and spouse Blane, Corey Hall and spouse Samantha (Sam), Bailey Hill and spouse Travis, Jacob McCraw, Cole McCraw and spouse Grace, Wilson (Wil) McCraw, Cody Hall, Garrett Hall and Tyler Hall and three great grandchildren Tyler and Tucker Cheatham, and Shepherd Hill. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jeannie Roberson.
It is hard to sum up a life so well lived but knowing him well the term faithful servant best describes Byron's life. First and foremost, he served his Lord and Savior. He served his wife faithfully for 63 years. Byron served his family, his widowed mother, his children and their children and was a godly example of a loving son, husband, father and grandfather his entire life. He served his country. He served his softball teammates. Byron served his friends with prayers, wisdom and encouragement. He served his patients as a dentist for 60 years. He served his church, Calvary Assembly of God, as a deacon for many years. His family and friends can well attest, as Byron kneels before the Lord with a vigorous renewed body, he has heard the greatest compliment of all from whom he pinned all of his hopes, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
A memorial service for Byron will be held Saturday, February 1st, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston TX, 77077, followed by a celebration of life reception from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
