Carl W. Sontag, a native of Houston, Texas, passed away at the age of 91 on January 22, 2022. Carl graduated from Reagan High School in Houston and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home, he attended the University of Houston receiving a certification for Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Repair and then started his own business called Arrow Refrigeration. While at UH, he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and won the Fanciest Beard Contest at Frontier Fiesta in 1957.
Carl always enjoyed the outdoors with a special fondness for cattle and horses. He rode in the Salt Grass Trail Ride for 20+ years culminating each year with a parade through downtown Houston.
As a 60-year member of Hermann Sons, a fraternal life insurance organization, Carl was an Agent and Past President of Magnolia Lodge #7 and Edelweiss Magnolia Lodge #47. He also served many years on the Youth Camp Committee and bowled on the Hermann Sons Bowling League.
Carl was a 50-year Master Mason at Gray Lodge # 329 in Houston. As an Arabia Shrine member, he volunteered often at the Shrine Circus in charge of the Lost & Found. Later he joined the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Patron of Houston Ransford Chapter #135 with his granddaughter, Sherry Dieckmann.
He was a lifetime member of the First Lutheran Church in Houston serving on various committees and ministries.
Preceded in death by his parents, Anna Agnes Molkenbur and Alfred Fritz Sontag; his sister, Elaine Minette Sontag Lankford; and loving wife, Rose Marie Kubricht Sontag. Survived by three daughters, Mary R. Kubricht White, Sheila Lum and Anna Larie Keith and husband Paul all from Houston, TX; five grandchildren, Sherry Dieckmann, Matthew Lum, Lindsay Lum, Charles Keith and Tyler Keith; five great grandchildren, Jedidiah Dieckmann, Joshua Dieckmann, Nayeli Keith, Emma Lum and Charlotte Lum.

Visitation for Carl will be held Thursday, January 27, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. The funeral service will occur Friday, January 28, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. Graveside services will immediately follow from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Brookside Memorial Park, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039.
