Carla Maria Romero was born on July 26, 1994, at Bellaire Hospital in Houston, Texas, to Mario Romero Sr. and Florida Romero. Carla passed away on October 6, 2026, at age 31. She is survived by her parents and siblings: Mario Romero Jr., Yomaira Romero, Mauricio Galo, and Yesenia Galo.
Carla’s life was a rich tapestry of creativity, care, and connection. A graduate of Baylor University, she built flourishing careers in both New York City and Houston, where her impact as a cultural connector and artist took root. Through her multidisciplinary practice as a sonic selector, image maker, and event producer, Carla transcended boundaries by blending her gifts to create spaces where magic and meaning could coexist. Her work centered on storytelling and human connection, always guided by honesty, community, and representation.
Deeply inspired by her Salvadorian heritage and Southwest Alief upbringing, Carla’s intersectional work with Black and Brown queer communities reflected her devotion to amplifying diverse voices. Her cyanotype and photographic works mirrored patience, trust, and authenticity, while her use of archives, family photos, and cultural ephemera revealed a profound curiosity about identity, memory, and belonging. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives and creative spaces she touched, forever echoing her belief that connection itself is an art form.
