Carmen Alicia Cabrera, 62, a resident of Houston, TX, passed away on August 12, 2019 at Willowbrook Methodist Hospital.

She was born on October 17, 1956 to Oscar and Clara Fernandez Cabrera. In her adolescence, she lived in Houston, TX, Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. After college, she lived and worked in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area and Brownsville, TX, later returning home to Houston, TX. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Houston and a Masters in Hospital Administration from Texas Women’s University, and most recently, received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Houston-Downtown and was working towards attaining her CPA. She was the Clinical Manager at the UTHealth – School of Dentistry, OMS department for over ten years. She is a Breast Cancer and Multiple-Myeloma survivor and was currently fighting kidney disease and a second bout of Multiple Myeloma, but she never let her health battles dull her beautiful smile and graciously welcomed everyone she met. She fought such a brave battle until her body gave out.

She was an avid reader of John Grisham books and loved watching Cold Justice with her daughter. Carmen enjoyed traveling around the world with her family, and really loved planning out everything they would do on their adventures. She was a detail-oriented person and loved making lists of goals/dreams/wishes, obligations, and budgets for herself and anyone that asked. She loved numbers and remembered EVERYONE’s birthday. She looked forward to traveling to new places once she received a new kidney and her daughter graduated from law school. She had two special-needs rescue dogs that she loved and cared for, and would relax after a long week by tending to her garden and taking care of her plants.

She is survived by her daughter, Jaclyn Barbosa, her mother, Clara, her siblings, Patricia, Frank, his wife and children, and Marcella; her cousins, aunts, uncles, godsons, and many other relatives, friends and neighbors whose love and friendship she also carried in her heart. She joins her father, Oscar, in heaven. Special appreciation goes out to Willowbrook Methodist Hospital, Memorial Hermann Hospital, and MD Anderson Cancer Center that always took such great care of Carmen.

She is fondly remembered by her family and friends that love and miss her sooooo much.

Jackie,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. Her life appears to have been one of knowledge and the seeking of knowledge and the love of you. She was so impressive. She must have been so proud of you!
I lost my mother three months before I finished law school. The loss and love make the graduation bitter sweet.
God bless you and your mom.

I have known Carmen since the college years at U of H. As you can see we go way back. Carmen was very smart, caring and a lot of fun to be around. She was very accomplished and dedicated to her academic and professional goals, also very family oriented. I will always remember her contagious laugh with so much gusto. We always have enjoyed each other's company. We will crack up to the most silly comment. We recently reconnected within the last two years since we both have had health issues, another common bond that made our friendship stronger. I have been thinking a lot about Carmen since her passing. It only reinforces the fact that we are all here temporarily and life is very fragile & precious! I have been praying for her family and wishing them strength. Carmen is resting peacefully now and not suffering anymore. Carmen will be watching over her family as their new guardian angel. Of course, we will miss our dearest Carmen but we must think of the good memories we shared with her to keep us going until we meet again. She will always have a very special place in my heart. A dear friend gone too soon. Rest In Peace !🙏🏻🙏🏻
