Mrs. Carmen Espinosa, 92 years of age passed away into eternal rest in Houston, Texas on 8/11/2022. Sra. Carmen was born in Cd. Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico on 4/15/1930 to Isabel Garcia and Jose Merced Rodriguez. She completed her schooling through Secundaria and then attained a Certificate in Administrative Secretarial Services including taquigrafia (shorthand), mecanografia (typing), and contabilidad (accounting). Sra. Carmen married Mateo Espinosa†, and they had five children: Carmen†, Mercedes, Maria Perla, Maria de Jesus, & Eduardo. In her youth she worked in a hatchery collecting newly hatched chicks and surveying the incubators. She began her professional life as an Administrative Secretary for a Funeral Home in her hometown. She moved to the big city, Monterrey, N.L., Mexico where she met and married Mateo Espinosa who had been a next-door neighbor in their childhood. In 1964 they moved to the Pilsen Neighborhood in Chicago, IL, where she raised their four children as full-time homemaker and later as a caring grandmother. When widowed she moved to Houston, Texas where she cared for two more grandchildren. In Houston she became a US Citizen and voted at every opportunity. She enjoyed participating in the Senior program at the Latino Learning Center and later at the Baker-Ripley Heights Senior Center. Sra. Carmen was also a proud member of the Guadalupanas and Legion de Maria at All Saints Church, along with her daughter she joined the Movimiento Familiar to help form a group for widowed and single mothers raising their children on their own, Madres Responsables. She was instrumental at The Arc of Harris County (formerly of Greater Houston). She was the first caregiver for the children with disabilities when the Spanish parent support group “Familias Hispanas del Arc” was formed. She made it possible for the mothers to meet monthly at the Chicano Center. She was devoted to her family and endured many hardships. She modeled for her children, and all that knew, her how to overcome by being resilient and strong in her faith in God. We remember for her keen eye and wonderful sense of humor.
