Carmen was born to the late Salvador Goñi Portillo and Sara Rubio Plaza in Mexico City, Mexico on January 8, 1938. She met her husband, Donald Eugene Hope through a mutual friend in Mexico and it was love at first sight. They spent the next several months exchanging love letters while Donald served in the military overseas. Carmen and Donald were together for 55 years before his passing. Together they had three children, Harry Anderson Hope III, Anthony Charles Hope, and Sarah Anne Hope. After moving around for many years with the military, Carmen and Donald planted roots in El Paso, Texas.
Carmen worked for the El Paso Police Department and the Sanitation Department before her retirement in 1994. She spent her free time serving the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Community as a lector, eucharistic minister, and ACTS Sister. She was a longtime member of the Earthen Vessels religious community, whom, over the years, became family. She was an avid knitter and created many beautiful pieces for friends and family over the years. She will be dearly missed by her loved ones.
Carmen is survived by her son Harry Hope III and his wife, Linda; her son Anthony Hope; her grandchildren Harry Hope IV and his wife, Dana, Katherine Oh and her husband David, Hannan Alkhalifa and her fiancé Anthony, Aliah Hope, Dana Carmen Hope, and Faith Elizabeth Soto; her great grandchildren Kylee Hope and Philip Oh; and her sister, Maria Goñi Rubio. She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Eugene Hope; her daughter, Sarah Anne Hope; her brothers, Rodolfo, Antonio and Salvador Goñi Rubio; and her parents.
