Carol Jean Moehlman

Born in Harlingen, Texas, to Dr. and Mrs. Troy Shafer, Carol Jean was known early on for her kindness, intelligence and indomitable spirit. She attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Plan II degree in 1963. She then moved to Houston and, newly married, began teaching high school English. With the birth of her son Matthew, she retired from teaching.

She then began a committed study of American decorative arts and paintings. That study began at the Harris County Heritage Society and its unique village of restored historic buildings at Sam Houston Park. In 1977, she became a member of the Bayou Bend Docent Organization, serving as a touring docent at the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. She served in several BBDO offices and became its General Chairman in 1996 -1997. At the time of her death, she was a member of several Museum of Fine Arts Houston committees, including serving as Co-Chairman of the Bayou Bend Accessions Committee.

St. Martin’s Episcopal Church was a special and very important part of her life. She was a long-time member of its Altar Guild.

Above all, Carol Jean was devoted to her family. In 1963, she married the love of her life, Mike Moehlman, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage. She is survived by Mike, her son Matthew Moehlman, his wife Anna, and granddaughter Faye (New York City), her sister-in-law Dr. Patricia Moehlman (Guilford, Connecticut and Arusha, Tanzania), and her sister-in-law Jackie McCreary and husband Frank (Houston). She is also survived by nephew Frank Ward McCreary, his wife Ana Marie and daughter, Alina, and niece, Jennifer McCreary, her husband Stephen James and son Murray.

The family would like to thank Dr. Tejal Shah, Dr. Petros Carvounis, the staff of Hallmark Assisted Living, Jacqueline Smith and Barbara Nelson for all their kind and dedicated care of Carol Jean.

Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Carol Jean from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 16th of September, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The family will gather for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery.
