Born on September 30, 1946, in Iola, Kansas, Carol was the daughter of Harry Irvin Hay and Nellie Fern Oshel. She lived a life marked by unwavering determination, deep faith, and a profound commitment to service—both in her professional career and personal pursuits.
Carol married the love of her life, Richard D. Young, on November 13, 1964, in Wichita, Kansas. They recently commemorated their 60th wedding anniversary, reflecting the strength of their enduring partnership and mutual commitment. Their union was blessed with two children: Jenny Chapman and Richard D. Young II (Rik). Carol cherished her family deeply and found immense joy in her roles as wife, mother, and grandmother.
Her academic journey was as inspiring as it was extensive. Carol earned a Diploma in Nursing from the Lillie Jolly School of Nursing in 1968 and continued to pursue higher education throughout her life. She obtained an Associate of Arts from North Harris County College in 1979, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Houston Baptist University in 1981. Her passion for learning led her to earn a Master of Business Administration in Management from the University of Houston in 1994 and culminated with a PhD in Organization and Management from Capella University in 2005.
Carol’s professional career started at Texas Children’s Hospital and spanned more than four decades at Memorial Hermann Hospital System. She began as a registered nurse in Labor and Delivery and retired as the Magnet Coordinator—a role that reflected her leadership and dedication to nursing excellence. Her commitment to healthcare extended beyond the hospital walls; she spent one year teaching Health Occupations to high school students within Aldine Independent School District and twelve years dedicated to higher education as an online instructor specializing in Healthcare Administration and Organizational Behavior. Her influence reached countless students across the country who benefited from her knowledge and mentorship.
Faith played a central role throughout Carol’s life. For many years she worshipped at Aldine Christian Church where she served faithfully as a deaconess. Alongside her husband Richard, they led Junior Church for the youth—a ministry close to their hearts. After Aldine Christian Church closed its doors, Carol continued her spiritual journey with Northwest Church of Christ.
Carol’s zest for life extended far beyond academics and career achievements. At age 55, Carol took up marathon running with characteristic resolve. She joined the 50 States Marathon Club and completed marathons in every U.S. state—a remarkable feat that speaks volumes about her perseverance and adventurous spirit. In total, she completed an astounding 75 marathons and numerous half-marathons across multiple continents.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband Richard D. Young; daughter Jenny Chapman; son-in-law Russell Chapman; grandson Blake Chapman; son Richard D. Young II (Rik); daughter-in-law Hettie Richardson; granddaughter Canice Young; sisters Linda Matney and Diane Guy; brother-in-law Samuel Guy; along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, former colleagues, students—and all those whose lives were touched by her strength and compassion.
