

Carolyn Monteith Clarke died at her residence in Houston, Texas on Monday, the 29th of June 2015. Mrs. Clarke grew up in Houston, the daughter of Grace Wilson Monteith and Millard Edgar Monteith, who lovingly shaped her early years. She was a member of the first graduating class of Lamar High School, attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia and graduated from the University of Texas where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She married William Stephens Clarke in 1943.
She was a devoted member of the Church of St. John the Divine and was active in many civic organizations. She was president of the Junior League of Houston, president of the Garden Club of Houston and of the Institute of Spirituality and Health in the Texas Medical Center for five years. She served on the Boards of the YWCA, The Houston American Cancer Society and the Foundation for Teen Health. She served on several committees of the Garden Club of America and was very proud of recognitions she received from them and other organizations.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Bill, who supported her in all her endeavors; and her brother, Edgar Wilson Monteith. She is survived by her children, Stephen Monteith Clarke and Elisabeth Avery Clarke; grandson, Stephen Monteith Clarke II and wife, Laura Pincoffs Clarke; great-grandchildren, Shepherd Stephens Clarke and Lyle Elizabeth Clarke; sister-in law Mary Frances Dorrance Monteith; nephews, William Van Hala Clarke and wife Stephanie; Walter Wilson Monteith and wife Cheryl; Dorrance Wright Monteith and wife Lynn and their families; and former daughter-in-law, Janice McDonald Hall and husband Charlie.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 9th of July, at the Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard, where The Rev. Janet W. Dantone is to officiate and The Rev. Laurens Hall is to assist. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be announced at the service.
At a later date, the family will gather for a private interment at the family ranch in Salado, Texas.
