Carolyn was born on the 5th of September 1939 to Pauline Frances Sims Burton and Reuben Edison (Pat) Burton at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She attended Poe Elementary, Lanier Junior High, Lamar High School, and the University of Texas at Austin graduating in 1961. In each school she attended, she was a leader of activities and actively played sports. She had great fun on the softball and bowling teams. She married her childhood sweetheart, Carlos Robert Hamilton, Jr. whom she loved and adored from junior high school to her passing. She was elected Pow Wow Sweetheart at Lamar High School when Carlos was president of the club. She held offices in girls’ social clubs and enjoyed being in the Lamar Mayfete. Carolyn and Carlos were the first recipients of the Lamar High School Distinguished Alumni Award. After high school, she loved attending the University of Texas, being a Kappa Alpha Theta becoming the State Rush Chairman as a senior and later as an alumnae serving as Theta Charity Antiques Show Chairman. After graduation she enjoyed teaching elementary education and was a gifted and highly acclaimed teacher and Assistant Principal in HISD.
Carolyn enjoyed friends from many organizations such as the River Oaks Garden Club (and having her home on the Azalea Trail), the River Oaks Blossom Club, serving as a docent at Bayou Bend and participating in the Junior League of Houston. After returning to Houston following her husband’s medical training and Air Force service, she enjoyed playing tennis competitively, worked on countless charitable endeavors, all while being actively engaged with her children Carlos Robert Hamilton III and Patricia Hamilton Blalock at the Kinkaid School and their various activities.
Her greatest pleasure was her family and most of her life centered on them. She enjoyed many family trips and holidays having everyone together. Her membership at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church which she attended with her family was a great comfort.
She was chairman of the Flower Guild and Wedding Guild for many years, and was a member of the prayer line until her death. She and her husband hosted Lenten meetings in their home regularly. For many years Carolyn enjoyed playing mahjong with friends. Carolyn always said her greatest pleasure was dinner at Houston Country Club, trips, and visits with her husband, children and their spouses, and her cherished granddaughters - Madeleine Janes Hamilton, Grace Elizabeth Hamilton, Frances Carolyn Hamilton, and Carolyn Hamilton Bivins, and her daughter-in-law Marci Curry Hamilton and son-in-law Michael Blalock. Carolyn embodied kindness, patience, fun, an enduring love and great faith, and will be dearly missed.
The family will gather for a private service and interment at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston.
