Cary Lee Shumate

Cary Lee Shumate was granted his angel wings on Monday, October 25, 2010 after an unexpected diagnosis of cancer. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Cary had touched in some small way, throughout his very memorable life.

Cary was born February 16, 1958 in Houston, Texas to John Armstead Jr. and Lillie Karr Shumate. Cary had a passion for life. Whether it was running in the Special Olympics or participating at dances with Teens and Friends. He always lived for the moment. Cary loved music and could sing every word to the songs on the soundtrack of Grease and loved Olivia Newton John. Cary was a sports enthusiast. If his Cowboys, Texans, Rockets or Astros were playing we always knew Cary would be there supporting his team by wearing his favorite team jersey during their games. Sports weren’t Cary’s only passion, he loved to work. Cary was employed by Gerland’s-Food Town for 22 years as a sacker, in which he received many awards for his service.

With Cary’s passing we remind others that his life is one to be celebrated, although we will miss him everyday. He will forever remain in our hearts.

Cary leaves behind many wonderful caregivers at Bethesda Lutheran Communities that provided love and support that enhanced his quality of life. All of these special people, too numerous to mention, provided Cary with love and dignity in his life and also in his death.

Cary is survived by his loving mother, Lillie Shumate; Brother Larry Shumate and wife Karen; Niece Natalie Sanchez and husband Oscar; Nephews Travis and Spencer; Great Nieces Kaitlyn, Briana, Raygan and Mya; Aunt Betty Ballard; Uncle Fred Karr; and countless loving relatives and friends.

We will be celebrating Cary’s life with a Memorial Service being held 12:30 Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway Houston, TX 77079. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on behalf of Cary to:
