It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Catherine Gene Harris. Cathie was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on November 17, 1943. She passed away on August 18, 2019 at Memorial City Hermann Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Cathie grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she graduated from Edison High School and the University of Tulsa. She then went on to earn her Medical Technology degree and began her career in Tulsa as a medical technologist. Our family moved to Houston in 1979 where she worked at Rosewood Hospital. After years in the medical field Cathie started a new chapter in her life when she found that she loved to travel. She pursued her passion by purchasing her own agency- Universal Travel. It gave her great joy to send friends on wonderful adventures as their agent.
Besides her family and traveling, Cathie’s biggest love was tennis. She belonged to Westside Tennis Club for close to 40 years. She frequently participated in the activities they offered at Westside including tennis, bridge, yoga and water aerobics. Most importantly, she found a network of beautiful, loving people who became part of her “Westside family.”
Her highest calling was that of a Mother. She did the job beautifully. She allowed her children to make mistakes, learn from them, and to grow. She was always there as a mother and as a grandmother to lend an ear, to give support, to be a cheerleader, and ultimately, to be a friend.
She leaves behind her daughters Kimberly VanOverdam, Stacey Brim, and Christi Saltus; sons-in-law Carl VanOverdam and Christian Brim; grandchildren Austin and Hailey VanOverdam; Catherine, Mackenzie, and Benjamin Brim; Tyler and Blake Saltus; Drew and Cameron Saltus, as well as great grandchildren Adeline Saltus, Bonnie Saltus, Abigail Saltus, and Aiden Procel; sister-in-law Suzanne Wright, nieces Stephanie Dary and Shay Wright, and their families.
Her beautiful, loving spirit; her infectious smile, and her unyielding love for her family will be treasured forever.
