Chappie Lovejoy Walker Ashburn, 97, born May 16, 1923 in the little town of Hull, TX (Liberty County), passed away on May 7, 2021 in Sealy, TX (Austin County) just 9 days before what would have been her 98th birthday.
After moving around between several small southeast Texas oil field towns as a child, Chappie graduated from Boling High School in Boling, TX in 1940. After graduation she attended Massey Business College in Houston, TX and then worked in the insurance field for a while. Chappie married James Douglas Ashburn in Houston in 1950 and they settled into their new home in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Houston in 1954 where she lived up until recent years when she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law in Sealy, TX.
Jim and Chappie joined St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Houston in 1957 and remained active members for many years. Chappie was also a long-time volunteer in her Oak Forest neighborhood’s Girl Scout program and at the Manna Resale Store when it was at its former W. 43rd St. location.
Chappie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Calvin Walker and Celestia Beyer Walker; brother, Calvin Beyer Walker; sister, Tommy Lou Walker Snider; and husband of 54 years, James Douglas Ashburn. Survivors include daughter, Barbara Ashburn Crayne and son-in-law George Everett Crayne of Sealy, TX; son, Douglas Alan Ashburn of Houston, TX; granddaughters Lindsey Joy Ashburn and Katie Nicole Crayne; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic no public funeral services are planned. A private burial was held at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, TX.
