Known as Scooter to his family and friends, he was born on the 26th of September 1946, in Houston, the oldest child of Charles Guy Hooks Jr. and Irma Katherine Walden Hooks.
Early in his childhood, his family moved from River Oaks to the Tomball area where he graduated as co-valedictorian of Tomball High School in 1964.
During his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas Austin, he applied for Officer Candidate School in the United States Navy where he served honorably as a Lieutenant JG during the Vietnam War. Upon his Honorable Discharge, he returned to Texas earning a Juris Doctorate Degree from UT Austin in 1975.
On the 28th of June 1975, he married Sue Ann Meyer, and they began a life in the Garden Oaks neighborhood of Houston. Charles Guy “Chase” Hooks IV joined their family shortly before his 30th birthday in 1976.
Upon moving to Garden Oaks, Scooter joined St. James Lutheran Church where he served many roles including Church Treasurer and Congregation President. He delighted in singing with the choir while his wife Sue directed.
In 1983, the family moved to the Memorial City area where he remained for the rest of his life.
In 2014, the Hooks family joined Christ the King Lutheran Church where they remain active members.
For over four decades until his retirement in 2017, Scooter utilized his vast legal knowledge and skills to direct the operations of the family partnership Chas. G. Hooks & Son founded at the turn of the century by his grandfather, one of the earliest Texas oilmen. Along the way, he was instrumental in the operations of David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport and the development of multiple residential and commercial subdivisions. His attention to detail was legendary. He is no doubt proofreading and critiquing this writing from above.
As a member and leader of numerous civic and charitable organizations throughout the Houston area, his community impact was vast. He served as President of the Willow Creek Cemetery Association for over thirty-five years. He was also a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of University Area where he served numerous roles, including Club President.
Scooter leaves behind his wife of fifty years, Sue Ann Meyer Hooks; and his son, Charles Guy “Chase” Hooks IV of Houston. He is also survived by his nephews, Scott Ira McKeever Jr., and David Wayne (Danette) McKeever of Colorado Springs; as well as numerous cousins, grand nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
He was preceded on death by his siblings, David Wayne Hooks, Robert Walden Hooks, Katherine Elaine Hooks McKeever; and his parents, Charles Guy Hooks Jr. and Irma Katherine Walden Hooks.
The family especially wishes to thank the caregivers and the staff of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center for their outstanding care during the final years of his life.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family at ten o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 30 of May, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where the funeral service is to commence at eleven o’clock.
Immediately following all will be invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent grand foyer.
The interment service will follow the reception, via an escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston at two o’clock in the afternoon.
Those serving as honorary pallbearers are Charles G. Hooks IV, Matthew H. Jenkins, Matthew T. Martin, David W. McKeever, Scott I. McKeever, Jr., and James Pearson.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family request with gratitude that donations be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church or Willow Creek Cemetery Association.
