Charles Joseph, better known to family and friends as “Patrick,” was born June 3rd, 1948, to Marie Anne Jean, also known as Rhona, from Castries on the beautiful island of Saint Lucia. His upbringing was by his maternal grandparents in a remote part of the Village of Gros-Islet called La Borne. He attended the Monchy Combine School prior to joining his mother in the French Dependency of Cayenne in South America in 1964. He lived there for seven years.
Upon returning to St. Lucia in 1971, he worked as a kitchen staffer at Carib Blue Hotel in Gros-Islet. In 1978, his only sibling, Florentine Alfred, filed for him, and he migrated to St. Croix, U.S.V.I. On St. Croix, he worked at V.I. Mart, Hovensa, and then joined the Juan F. Luis Hospital kitchen staff in 1984 until his retirement on December 31st, 2009.
On June 3, 1992, Patrick married the love of his life, Eva Rita Polimis. The couple had no children, but Patrick had a love for animals and considered his dog “Buddy“ his son and best friend.
Patrick was an avid gardener with double-green thumbs. Anything and everything he planted grew and yielded produce. He thought he had 10 acres of land as there were mangoes, coconuts, papayas, yams, guava, sugar apples, carambola, custard apples, grapefruit, soursop, turmeric, and avocados; you name it, he grew it
.
Patrick was known to have a wired sense of humor, even switching words. If one says the car was not working, he would say “Sell the car and buy the part.” If there was no phone service, he would say “Sell the phone and buy the service.” If one says barbecue, he would say “Cue-barbi,” or Walmart would be “Mart-wal,” and who can forget him sitting with his legs crossed and answering the phone when a good friend called saying, “Talk to me; I’m not a beast.”
In 1993, he was diagnosed with diabetes and has been battling this dreadful disease up until he was called home. His chains are gone, and he has been set free. The Lord chose to call him home to be with Him in eternity. Patrick, there is no doubt in our minds that God has given you your heavenly wings. We have comfort in knowing we will see you again. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
