Charles M. McCann, age 74, died from heart complications on Wednesday, the 10th of April 2013. He was born on the 8th of May 1938, in Midland, Texas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. McCann of Oklahoma City.
He is preceded in death by his brother Jim. He is survived by his daughter, Allison and her husband Guy Garner; two grandsons, Cade and Carson Garner; and his sister, Sally McCann Holmes of Edmond, Oklahoma.
Having grown up in Oklahoma City, he attended Westminster College where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He then transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he graduated in 1962 with a business degree. After serving two years in the US Army where he received a medal for helping Korean orphans, he then moved to Houston in 1965 where he worked in the commercial mortgage business for five years. He returned to the oil business as a landman and royalty owner and pursued a career in royalty management and acquisition working for the next 30 years throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Charles was an excellent business man and excelled at negotiating oil and gas leases.
As a historian of the oil business he assembled a large library on exploration plays, biographies and company histories which were gifted to educational and technical organizations. He was also an ardent hunter and fisherman while maintaining memberships to numerous conservation and wildlife organizations. His love for the outdoors began when he was young and took numerous float trips, his favorite being Mountain Fork River in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.
One of his finest qualities was his dry wit and storytelling which brought a smile to one's face. He was the epitome of a true gentleman in manners and style but it never stopped him from helping others in need. Because of these assets he will be missed by many who knew and loved him.
Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Charles from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 18th of April, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to Brooke Army Medical Center, 3551 Roger Brooke Drive, Fort Sam Houston, TX, 78234-6200.
