Charles Byrl Mitchell

Charles Byrl Mitchell, age 91, passed away March 6, 2026 at home in Houston, Texas. He was born June 25, 1934, in Kilgore, Texas, a son of the late Thomas B. Mitchell and Hallie Lee Ayer. Through his journey of 91 years, he touched many lives with his wisdom, humor, and love. Among the many milestones of his well-lived life, Charlie is most remembered for his unending devotion and relentless love for his wife, Bettye Ann Ragland Mitchell, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. They met in high school in Levelland, Texas.

Charlie graduated from Texas Tech University and retired from Exxon Mobil as an accountant. He was an avid bowler and loved traveling as he and his wife enjoyed numerous trips abroad.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Tommy Lee Mitchell, and his brother, James Edwin Mitchell.

He is survived by nephews and nieces: Mark Ragland, Patrick Ragland, Jennifer Ragland Prestigiacomo, Kirk Ragland, and Kendra Ragland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Charlie’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 10, at 1:00 PM. Family and friends are encouraged to gather beforehand at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
