Charles Lowell Wood returned to the Lord on Monday, September 6, 2010 after a brief illness. He was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on December 20, 1931 to Jesse Lowell Wood and Mary Sutherland Wood. Charles was truly a great guy – a kind soul who looked for and found the best in everyone. He always had a smile on his face, a bear hug for his loved ones, and a helping hand for friends and strangers alike. Charlie led an exemplary life but would want to be remembered most as the loving husband of 57 years to Pat, devoted and respected father to Dave, Tom and Susan, beloved and doting PaPa to his grandchildren David, Mackie and Kendall Wood and Lindsey and Kyle Pogson, and gracious father-in-law to Carrie Wood and Ken Pogson. He is also survived by his dear sister Shirley Fallert and family of Gahanna, Ohio.
Charles attended Southeast Missouri State College on an athletic scholarship. He graduated from the University of Missouri after serving with the U.S. Air Force in the Pacific for four years. He began his business career in St. Louis and his work led the family to Houston in 1967. He was active in the investment business his entire career primarily in municipal bonds and was a partner at Cowen & Co. Charles served as Chairman of the Municipal Advisory Council of Texas and was on the board of the Public Securities Association. He was a mentor to many and respected by all.
Some of his favorite times were spent playing tennis with family and friends at the Houston Racquet Club where he served as President in the 1970s, and in later years playing golf at Lakeside Country Club. After retiring he was an active volunteer with the Men of Action group at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church and Memorial Assistance Ministries.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, September 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive with The Reverend Daniel Irving officiating. A reception with the family will follow in the church Friendship Court. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be directed to the Men of Action Youth Scholarship Fund, attention Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, or to a charity of your choice.
