Charles Bryan Worthen, 94, passed away on September 16, 2023 in Houston, TX of natural causes.
Charles was born December 27, 1928 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Charles Bryan Sr. and Dora Coughran Worthen. Charles was an ex-marine, first in his family to attend college and graduated from the University of Tulsa with an accounting degree. He attended night classes while working full time at Tidewater Oil Co. and graduated in 1963 with his then 5 children in attendance.
Charles enjoyed the outdoors and appreciated all that nature has to offer. He tirelessly worked in his large vegetable garden at his Timberside home and loved to fish and hunt. After retiring from Tidewater/Getty/Texaco Oil Company at the age of 56, he purchased a lake lot on lake Livingston and single handedly built a 2-bedroom home. That home housed a countless number of family gatherings, celebrations and weekend fishing trips with his children and grandchildren.
Charles was a religious man and was a devoted member of Bethany United Methodist Church for many years. He and his family attended church regularly and took up a large part of the pew about six rows back from the pulpit. Charles was a kind, caring and loyal husband and father. He was honest, had high morals and a very strong work ethic which hopefully he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Charles was married to Freda Mendenhall Worthen for 61 years until her passing in 2011. In the latter part of his life he was accompanied by his second love, Nancy Bagozzi. He is survived by Nancy, his sister Mildred Evins, his children Janis Worthen, Tom Worthen and wife Cathy, Linda Garcia and husband Joe, Sandra De Renouard and husband Chris, Mike Worthen and wife Dee Ann, Jim Worthen and wife Beth, his 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Charles was an inspiration and role model for all who knew him.
A private graveside service will be held with immediate family. He will be laid to rest at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer, Houston, Texas.
