Chong Ja Kim was born in Seoul, Korea on August 3, 1943. Her parents were 인 강환 In Kwang Hwan and 유 봉열 Yoo Bong Ryual. She studied French and attended Ewha Women's University in Seoul where she formed lifelong friendships. In 1967, she married Young Il Kim and started their family. In 1980, the family moved to Houston. She loved being a mother and enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, taking care of the family and exercising.
She had an entrepreneurial spirit so she opened up a jewelry store and ran it for 15 years. She retired as her children married as they started to have children of their own. She loved being a grandmother more than anything. She taught all the grandchildren the importance of kindness and love through example. She was truly the light of the family.
She had thyroid cancer in 2009 and then in 2013 discovered stage 4 lung cancer. She battled fiercely and gracefully throughout her treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on Saturday, April 1, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband Young Il Kim; her three children TJ, James and Sue; her adoring grandchildren Austin, Tiffany, Gavin, Audrey, Noah, Ryan, Isabella, and Olivia; and 5 loving siblings, Choon Ja, Chi Yong, Chi Sook, Il Seong, and Yoo Seong.
