Clarice Spikes, 80, of Houston, TX, passed away on March 23, 2022 after an extended illness. She was a devoted child of God, wife, mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt and friend to many. Her home and her heart were always open with a willingness to help and care for others.
She was born on January 15, 1942 to Henry Stewart and Lucille Cole Williams Stewart in Fort Worth Texas. She grew up in the Church in Many, Louisiana and Wellborn, Texas and as all will attest, throughout her life she never left and the church never left her.
Her formative years occurred in Many, Louisiana. She coveted her role as the oldest child of 5 children and the oldest grandchild of Clarice “Classy” Cole and Burl Williams and the oldest niece of Ina Mae and Walker Jackson. It was in Many that she learned to love the Lord with her mother, grandmother and Aunt Ina by her side. She grew up in the church and modeled her life after these formidable women. She was a praying wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend and nothing could separate her from the love of God.
In 1962, Clarice Stewart met Pilgrim Spikes through her brother-in-law Huey P Spikes in Houston, TX. Clarice and Pilgrim went on to raise 5 children, Roscoe Stewart, Patsy Williams, Venus Hite, Pilgrim Spikes Jr and Patrick Spikes. She had 3 main goals for her kids 1) to be baptized, 2) to have a place to call home and 3)to graduate from high school. And for her every other accomplishment was extra.
She went on to study nursing at Eastway General Nursing School, and received a Licensed Vocational Nurse designation. She received advance training as an Operating Technician, worked at, and retired from, Eastway General Hospital after many years. It was at Eastway that she formed additional lifelong friendships that provided her guidance and humorous stories that she shared with us all. And when she shared those stories with our Dad and her dearest friends Martha Carpenter, Gwen Hopkins and Essie Mae Sabb , you could hear her roaring laugh and joy for life. She was a big proponent of nursing and education and she encouraged others to pursue nursing as a career.
Clarice Spikes was preceded in death by Pilgrim (the love of her life whom she missed dearly), her parents, her sister Carolyn (Dilly), her brother Alywn (Qbdoll), 15 brother- and sister-in-laws and many friends. She is survived by her children and their partners, grandchildren (Clarice, Kenneth, Nikki, Clarissa & Kent), brothers (Robert & Earnest), brother and sister-in-laws (Calvin, Willie, Annemein, Bev, Evelyn & Jo Anna), cousins, 40+ nieces & nephews and friends.
May the Lord bless and keep her forever more as a true soldier and child of God is welcomed home.
