Clifford Eugene Spangler, 71, of Bellaire, Texas, husband of Dr. Mary Spangler, Chancellor of Houston Community College, died peacefully on January 26, 2011. He had battled a long-term illness with great courage and dignity for over a decade. Being given only three to five years as an original prognosis, he outlived the odds by surviving for fourteen through strong will, determination, optimism and study of the latest research.
An accomplished commercial real estate professional and former long-time resident of Los Angeles, CA, Cliff was a devoted husband and father. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he moved to the West Coast to pursue his college education, attending California State University, Northridge, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He met Mary, and within one year they were married. Cliff and Mary were married forty-five and one half years, and to that union, four years after their marriage, Clifford Eugene II was born.
Cliff loved the finer things in life—gardening, travels, epicurean experiences, all aspects of fine design and fashion. He took great pride in making sure that everything was the best....he recognized and appreciated elegance and style. He had a high level of integrity and was a man of great principles.
He leaves behind his wife, Dr. Mary S. Spangler, his son Clifford II, his daughter-in-law whom he admired, Elizabeth, and his only grandchild, Morgan Elizabeth, and a nephew, Kenneth Clark. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. Cliff will be most fondly remembered for his strong personality and unflinching pursuit of perfection.
