Columbus Baines, affectionately known as “Jr.,” was born on June 12, 1935, in Stafford, Texas, to Columbus Baines Sr. and Mamie Watson Baines.
Raised in Acres Homes and Independence Heights, Columbus remained a proud, life-long member of Houston’s Greater Heights community.
He graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1956, where he proudly participated in track and field.
Columbus married Ruby Lee Baines, and together they were blessed with two children, Brenda and Jerome.
A man of many talents, Columbus completed barber school and became a trusted barber to family, friends, and neighbors. He also offered his barbering services to funeral homes throughout the Houston area. A gifted craftsman who could build or repair nearly anything, he brought that same skill and dedication to his work as a machinist. After more than 25 years of service, Columbus retired from National Flame and Forge, where he was respected for his expertise and his generosity in training apprentices entering the trade.
In 1981, Columbus married Rosetta, and the two remained inseparable. Together, they created a loving home where family could gather, share joy, and make lasting memories.
Columbus gave his life to Christ at a young age and later joined Gospel Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of the Reverend Porter Hayes. He served faithfully as a deacon and church advisor and continued his devoted service after the Reverend Lionel Spencer was appointed. Columbus found great joy in serving the Lord and caring for his church family. As Sunday School superintendent, he made sure members had the resources they needed to continue studying God’s Word. He later joined Fresh Start Community Church under the leadership of Reverend Anthony Gillum Sr.
Columbus was also a proud Freemason and an active member of Lodge No. 297, A.F. & A.M.
Columbus, lovingly known as “Jr.,” will be remembered for his deep devotion to family, his dapper style, and his wonderful gift for bringing laughter to those around him.
Columbus leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Rosetta Baines; his daughters, Brenda Lacy (Gilbert) and Michelle Jackson (Rayfield); his sons, Jerome Baines and Rodney Phillips; his brother, Nick Baines; and his many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, each of whom will carry forward treasured memories of his love and laughter.
Columbus was preceded in death by his parents, Columbus Baines Sr., and Mamie (Watson) Baines; two brothers and six sisters; his wife, Ruby Lee Baines; four children he welcomed through love; and many dear friends and relatives who now rejoice in his homecoming.
