

Cristela Castillo Flores, 87, of Houston, Texas was called to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, December 20, 2024. She was born in Sonora, Texas on April 16, 1937 to Esteban Longoria Flores and Maria (Castillo) Flores. In addition to her parents, Cristela is preceded in death by her siblings: Robert Flores of California, Delia Pina of Eldorado, Texas, Odilia F. Duran of Houston, Texas, & Esteban (Steve) Flores of Houston, Texas.
Cristela married Gerardo N. Gonzalez on December 27, 1962 in Houston, Texas, then started a family immediately thereafter: daughter- Alpha Omega & son-Gerardo (Gerry) Nicanor II.
She dedicated 49 years to education, passionately striving to uplift and empower individuals from her Hispanic heritage. Cristela ascended to the presidency of HAABE (Houston Area Association of Bilingual Educators) where she championed the rights of bilingual teachers recognizing their dual language efforts as akin to the work of two individuals all to support Hispanic children.
Cristela was a true adventurer at heart, with a deep love for traveling that took her to the far corners of the world. Her journeys were not just about seeing new places; but, also about capturing the beauty she encountered through her vibrant paintings. Alongside her artistic pursuits, music was her constant companion. Cristela’s passion for travel, art, and music were intertwined, enriching her life and the lives of those around her.
Cristela’s life was deeply rooted in her love for bible scriptures and her unwavering faith in God. Her love for the scriptures and her Creator was not just a part of her life; it was the very essence of who she was.
She is survived by Daughter-Alpha Omega Cruz, & son, Gerardo "Gerry" Gonzalez, II as well as her grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she loved very much: Nadia Cristine Johnston and great grandchildren Noah & Thalia; Alycia Cristina Cruz, Leilah Gabriela Gonzalez, Gerry N. Gonzalez III, and Samuel Gonzalez. All those who knew her through her grandchildren called her “Wela.” She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank everyone who has prayed for her and the family through this difficult time. We find comfort in knowing that Cristela is free from pain and suffering and resting in peace.
