October 7, 1950 – May 23, 2025
Damon Joseph Brotherton, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025. He was born on October 7, 1950, in Houston, Texas, to the late Vivian Joseph Brotherton and Una Clark Brotherton.
Damon is survived by his devoted wife, Irene Brotherton; his loving sister, Mary Jennings, and her husband, Lawrence Jennings; his younger brother, Mark Brotherton; his nephew, Jeremiah Brotherton; and a multitude of cherished first and second cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, who instilled in him a strong sense of faith, family, and integrity.
A proud graduate of S.P. Waltrip High School, Damon went on to earn his engineering degree from Lamar University. He began his career at Bethlehem Steel in Beaumont, Texas, and later served with distinction at the Port of Houston, where he retired as Chief Structural Engineer. He also contributed his expertise as a member of the Board of Directors for the Structural Engineers Association of Texas.
Damon was a man of many interests—he loved tennis, hiking, traveling, and singing—but his deepest passion was his faith. He believed the Gospel was for every heart in every nation and lived out that belief with quiet conviction. For many years, he faithfully supported missionary friends serving in Africa, Japan, and Hawaii—encouraging them, praying for them, and giving generously to their work. Missions were not just a cause to him; they were a calling.
After retirement, Damon continued that mission work close to home. Through the Chinese Christian Mission, he taught a citizenship class that quickly became much more than just a lesson in civics. It became his ministry. He saw each student as a soul to be loved, guided, and encouraged—not only in becoming U.S. citizens, but in discovering the hope of belonging to the Kingdom of God.
Many of his students came from hard places, navigating a new land and language. Damon met them with kindness, patience, and compassion. With the heart of a disciple-maker, he walked with them not just through paperwork, but through life’s greater questions—always pointing gently toward grace, faith, and truth.
This was Damon’s legacy: quiet, faithful, and deeply rooted in the love of Christ. He gave generously, served humbly, and loved deeply. His impact will continue through the lives he touched, the faith he shared, and the family who will carry his memory forward.
