On June 20, 2022, Danny Michael O’Mara passed away at the age of 93. He is preceded in death by his love of 68 years, Betty, his mother, Edna, father, William, both of his brothers, Wallace and William, and numerous other family members and friends.
He is survived by his son, Wally O’Mara (wife Karen), and daughter, Rejeana Barnes (husband John), his three grandchildren, Chase Barnes (wife Ashley), Katie Barnes, Allison Gonzalez (husband Rick), and 4 great grandchildren, Grayson, Nate, Jhett, and Camila.
Born on January 2, 1929, in Ft. Worth, TX to William O’Mara and Edna Schilder O’Mara, Danny was the youngest of three boys. When Danny was only two, his mother passed away and the boys were raised by their grandmother. At the young age of 12, he was the first kid to deliver the Star Telegram Newspaper in Ft. Worth. He then spent many years attending the Panthers Boys Club, eventually became a counselor at the age of 15. In 1946, 17-year-old Danny signed up for the Marines and ended up serving two tours, in WWII and Korea. Danny returned home at 19 and things quickly changed for him; he spotted a beautiful girl working at the soda fountain, Betty! Soon after, they would become husband and wife and welcome two beautiful children, Wally, and Rejeana. As a family of four, they moved to Houston, Texas.
In 1961 Betty and Danny became members of Garden Oaks Church of Christ, where they would continue to call home for almost 60 years. He served as a deacon, a greeter, would help pass out communion, count donations, and would visit people who were sick every Tuesday. He was a proud member of a church group called the “Wise Owls” – where he earned the nickname “Curly”, despite being bald.
We have no doubt that Danny’s legacy of love and compassion will live on through the hearts and minds of his family and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. To quote one of his favorite songs, “This world is not my home, I’m just a-passing through, my treasures are laid up, somewhere beyond the blue… She’s waiting now for me, in Heaven’s open door”. We are at peace knowing that Danny is truly at home with his love, Betty, family, and the lord. There can be no greater joy than that.
A celebration of Danny’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, from 11:00 to 11:45 at American Heritage Funeral Home at 10710 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038. There will be a luncheon at noon following the service. The burial will be private.
