David Glen Hickerson, known just as Glen by friends and family, was born June 16, 1950 in Baytown, Texas. He lived in the Houston area most of his life, and in Pearland for over 20 years. At the age of 73, he passed away on January 8, 2024, surrounded by loved ones in his home.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher and Orlean Hickerson, as well as by his brother, John Fletcher Hickerson, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; Son, Eric Hickerson and his wife Suloa Travis, Son, David Hickerson and his wife Nadia, David’s children, Amber Pierce, Brandon, Mia, Ian, Zachary, Amber’s son, Parker, Sister, Gay Jackson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a loving family man, welcoming his father into his home during Fletcher’s final years. He enjoyed attending extended family reunions, as well as delighted in visits with his own children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. He always made time to spend with his siblings and their families.
Glen was a generous person. He gave life by donating blood frequently and regularly most of his life. He offered his time by volunteering in various activities, from planting marsh grasses to helping provide free Thanksgiving dinners. He provided regular donations to the Houston Food Bank and the SPCA.
Glen traveled to Europe during high school, but it was later in life he developed a real passion for traveling, from exploring the areas around Houston and in Texas, to visiting several states from New York to California, and jumping continent to see Hawaii. He loved it all; the vistas in the mountains of state parks, museums in different cities, and beaches on all our coasts.
Not least of all, Glen was a man of integrity with a strong work ethic. After a year at the University of Houston, he decided to enter the Navy to help him find his way. He served four years, reaching the rank of Hospital Corpsman 2, while working as an Aviation Medicine Technician. At first he thought he would like to become a hospital administrator at the Veterans Hospital in Houston. Realizing he would have to move to other hospitals across the country, as a married man with 2 small boys, he decided to find another way to use his knowledge. He studied programming at night, worked various jobs, including freelance programming and working with IBM hardware. Eventually finding his niche, he became the Lead Technician at one of the largest hospital systems (Common Spirit Health) at the Texas Medical center for over 20 years. He was looked up to by his colleagues and valued for his extensive knowledge of how the information systems and mechanical systems integrated and communicated, as well as for his personal passion and wisdom.
It was his request that in lieu of flowers, friends and family honor him with donations to any of the following charities:
Houston Food Bank
SPCA
American Red Cross
or, as a special honor to his dad, Gideons International
