

Diane Hong Halper Byerly, 72, of Houston, Texas, passed away on April 30, 2026. She was born on April 16, 1954, in Houston, Texas, to Ju Suey Hong and Shee Joe Hong, who were born in Foshan, China, before building a life for their family in Houston.
Diane was their third daughter born in America and grew up surrounded by the values of family, hard work, and dedication. As a young girl, she spent much of her time helping at her family’s store, located at 2215 Washington Avenue, an experience that helped shape her strong work ethic and determined spirit.
Diane graduated from Marian Catholic High School, Class of 1978, where she was voted Most Popular and recognized with many awards and honors. She went on to attend the University of Houston, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1982. While attending the University of Houston, she also worked at the Alley Theatre, reflecting her lifelong connection to the city of Houston and its community.
Diane built a long and respected career with Member Source Credit Union, where she worked for more than 40 years as a Loan Supervisor and Senior Financial Specialist. She was known for her dedication, professionalism, and the knowledge she brought to her work each day.
Outside of her career, Diane found joy in the simple and meaningful parts of life. She deeply loved her dogs and cared for them with devotion. She was also well-known for baking cakes, which became a special part of celebrations with family and friends. Birthdays, holidays, and gatherings were made sweeter by Diane’s cakes, and they will remain a cherished memory for those who loved her.
Diane will be remembered for her strength, loyalty, generosity, and love for her family. She is survived by her long-term partner, David Towery; her son, Garrett Byerly; her sisters, Ting Hong, Karen Hong, and Susan Low; and her brother, Herman Hong. She is also survived by her nieces, Jeanie Low and Elizabeth Copper, and her nephews, William Low and Christopher Low.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Family will gather in the lobby between 1:15 and 1:30 p.m. before being escorted to the graveside service.
