She was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where she attended and graduated from Lamar High School. She then received a business degree from the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She and Ronald married in 1957 and had two children. Dixie then threw her life into volunteer work for the schools her children attended and supported them both in their many activities. She was a life-long Presbyterian and a very active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and elder. Besides her family, her great passions were traveling the world and music. No destination was too “off the grid” for her. Dixie especially loved the opera and choral music and attended church concerts all over the city. She was gentle and gracious, generous and loving and a joy to those who knew her. Dixie was an active member of Al-Anon, sponsored children in Haiti through Bethlehem Ministries, and thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, she is survived by her loyal daughter, Kathy Vazquez with Vincent Vazquez and grandchildren, Brandon, Brianna, and Cameron Vazquez. She is also survived by her son, Rick Hire, and her former daughter-in-law, Wendy Parrish, whom she loved dearly, along with grandchildren, Katie Hire, Brooke Hire, Rachel Parrish, and a great grandson, Adam.
Dixie's family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and love to Mrs. Lois Bradberry, for her 35 years as a helper, friend and caregiver. Her unwavering support and gentle nature were things that Dixie deeply treasured and she always considered Lois to be part of her family.
