Doreen is survived by her children, Sharon Dudley Schrinner (Dee), of Sugar Land and Deborah Dudley Darroh (Will), of Richmond; grandchildren, Matthew Darroh (Leslie), of Houston and Rebekah Darroh James (Derek) also of Houston; and five great grandchildren. Doreen is preceded in death by her parents, Emily Fuller Davis and Roger Neal Davis of San Antonio, her brother Roger H. Davis of San Antonio, her sister Aletha Anderson of Corpus Christi, and husband, Merle Wayne Dudley of Houston.
Doreen was born on January 1, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, to Roger and Emily Davis. She graduated from Edison High School in San Antonio, Texas, in 1944. In 1948, she married Merle Dudley, whom she met via blind date while in nurse’s training in Galveston, Texas. After moving with Merle to San Antonio, Doreen began working for Jefferson State Bank as a teller. Over five years, the couple welcomed two daughters into their home, and Doreen devoted herself to the role of a positive, encouraging mother—teaching Sunday school at Methodist churches in Texas, Louisiana, and California; serving as Girl Scout leader in Louisiana; and room mother in all three states. Her children remember her as a devoted mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Doreen maintained a wide variety of friends of various faiths and backgrounds, sharing her faith by example. She believed in the essentiality of faith, always respecting and affirming the faiths of those she knew.
Doreen loved baking cookies for family and often offered to bake the cookie of choice for grandchildren going back and forth to college or to take as snacks on weekend trips, whether or not she was going on the trip. She was a generous individual who loved volunteering and who was passionate about her family. She was an active and dedicated member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church and often volunteered there as well as at the gift shop at West Houston Hospital.
A Memorial will be scheduled when social distancing conditions permit. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Doreen’s name to Memorial Drive United Methodist Church – Missions, 12955 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77079. The family would like to thank caregivers Janet Baker, Regina Butler, Catrina Churchwell, Liliana Martinez, Gertie Patterson, JoAnn Searles, and Tennille Smith for their strength and loving care.
